Sarah Palin’s “Target” List Could Backfire

Andrew Belonsky :: Wednesday, March 24th, 2010 3:40 pm

From attending Tea Party conventions to hanging with Michele Bachmann, Sarah Palin’s done a great job transforming herself into the right-wing’s unspoken leader. Or, at the very least, a main attraction. The right wing has become increasingly angry, not to mention irrational, and Palin’s latest stunt, issuing a list of electoral “targets” could make her more of an outlaw than a rebel.

Six democratic headquarters in four states have been vandalized with window-breaking bricks since health care passed this weekend. Those starts are Ohio, Arizona, New York and Kansas. Many lawmakers, including Louise Slaughter of New York and abortion-hating Democrat Bart Stupak have received death threats.

An Alabama man named Mike Vanderboegh has taken credit for firing up the right, and recently used his blog to urge “sons of liberty” to break windows at Democratic offices. Writes Vanderboegh, a former militia leader, “If we break the windows of hundreds, thousands, of Democrat party headquarters across this country, we might just wake up enough of them to make defending ourselves at the muzzle of a rifle unnecessary.”

The Vanderboegh story dove tails quite nicely with one of Palin’s recent tweets, “Commonsense Conservatives & lovers of America: ‘Don’t Retreat, Instead - RELOAD!’” That tweet included a link to her Facebook page, where the former Alaska governor announced she and Sarah PAC have twenty electoral targets across the nation, including Arizona and Ohio, the latter of which Sarah PAC has spent a lot of her donors’ money. Though it’s great press for Palin’s crusade, most stories revolve around Sarah PAC’s use of crosshairs to illustrate their geographic targets.

Palin would do well to distance herself from these right-wing outbursts. Secret Service has already launched investigations into a “death tweet” against President Obama, and the FBI’s looking into those made against lawmakers like Slaughter, whose family was mentioned in the foreboding message. It’s unclear whether Vanderboegh will face charges for his role, but inciting violence definitely breaks the law, and if Palin’s group becomes too far aligned with this extremist violence, she could, in theory, be described as an accomplice. And that would be disastrous for someone who may one day run for the White House: how can you be President of the United States if you’re accused of helping tear them apart?

  2. I’ve always said she’s dangerous. She has charisma and a pretty face, but she likes to wallow on the dark side - she taps into people’s fears and their angers and her lies and accusations encourage civil unrest at the least, and incite riots and violence at the worst. These are not the actions of a leader, they are the actions of a manipulative bully seeking fame and fortune and power. She’s already achieved the first two goals. Heaven help us if she should gain the third.

  3. So where was all your denouncements when people were making threats to Bushies, when enviro nuts and anarchists are trashing conventions and summits? When left-wing nut jobs flip over police cars and trash retailers along so-called peace rally marches?

I have little patience and no respect for anyone who incites violence or hate. But I also have little patience for pundits who are one sided and only take issue when the bad behavior is agains people and causes they like and then say and do nothing when it’s directed at the opposition. For me to take you more seriously when you get all up over these crazies you’ve got to set the hypocrisy aside and get a little pissed off when lefties do it too.

  7. It is so funny to hear the Progressives whine and spout the ad hominem attacks. They never form a rational argument or give facts to support a a premise that leads to any conclusion. They presume that others will simply accept their claims because they feel that they are more intelligent than anyone who disagrees with their agenda. The profanities of Mark Welch only go to show that the presumption of intelligence would not be wise.

  8. Sarah Palin is an embarrassment not only to Alaska but to the entire country. I live in Anchorage and I believe we need to start feeding some of Sarah’s bullshit back to her. How about we start publishing directions to her house out in Wasilla with a nice big bullseye on it? Aparently, she has no problem with that sort of thing, right?

  9. She has no charisma or a pretty face. Anyone who thinks she has the former is brainless. And anyone who thinks the former is blind.

  13. Let’s call all this teaparty bullshit what it really is — racism — pure and simple. It’s not about health care, or how the bill got passed into law. It’s about a bunch of poor white trash who can’t get past the fact that we now have a black president. GET. OVER. IT!!! Sarah Palin isn’t fit to shine Obama’s shoes and yet she continues to spew dangerous lies about him fully aware that she’s riling these morons into a frenzy. What an embarrasment she is. But more importantly, she is dangerous.

  14. These anti-government people are just sick and tired, and unhappy inside. They hate the government as a projection of their inner pain.
I think a lot of their inner conflict comes from sleep deficit, bad diet, running on adrenaline, and chemical toxins.
THIS GOES FOR YOU TOO ALLCAPS

  15. @ RICK NELSON, If your mom found out she had squamous cell carcinoma and it had already metastasized to distant sites, then her insurance company drops her… How would you feel about the bill then.?. O, keep in mind your families savings have been wiped out by crooks without boundaries or laws to keep them honest. Only to learn that preventive care could have saved her! How would you feel about the bill then? The lack of compassion for other people who are different from you or should I say, “Who has less” is unnerving and this is the state of our country right now. That goes to show that the presumption of your intelligence would not be wise.

  18. I had found Ms Palin to be a breath of fresh air during the campaign. However, during the last several months her behavior has not proven to be that of a Leader of ALL peoples of this country. Now, with her “hitlist”, her actions have denigrated into a call for violence. This is truly not what our Founding Fathers envisioned for a Great Nation.

  19. Maybe someone should come up with an anti-teen pregnancy poster…..put a picture of bristol palin with a gun target site over it…..with the message “don’t get pregnant until you get married.

this woman needs her own tactics turned on her.

  20. Sarah Palin and her followers scare me! Some people might find her charismatic but I think she is full of hate and anger for anyone who doesn’t share her views. She feeds off the fear and ignorance of the people who worship her. I hate to compare someone to Hitler but I have the feeling she and her posse would love nothing more than to round up all the democrats, blacks, Hispanics, gays, Jews and anyone else different than them and … Well you know how that ended.
