Say Anything Take Their Name Too Seriously
Stephen Blackwell :: Wednesday, October 28th, 2009 2:30 pm
Idolator have just published a treatise on Say Anything’s misguided, xenophobic, and slightly racist cover of ODB’s “Got Your Money.” You should read it.
It’s not my bag, or generally our site’s or magazine’s bag, to dig on a band. That said, Say Anything are the worst of the worst. Easily one of the worst bands of the past ten years. Probably worse than Panic! At The Disco. Maybe even worse than The Used. There might not be a bottom.
In the spirit of full disclosure, Death+Taxes, sadly, and under appalling guidance mind you, used to cover stuff like Say Anything. As a matter of fact, I was — I don’t want to say forced — coerced into interviewing front man Max Bemis once. It was some year’s ago, but I remember jotting down notes such as “complete phony” and “solipsistic retard.”
Anyway, they’re still at it. You can click the link up top if you wanna hear a white kid shout “n-word,” which, I suppose, could be interpreted as a type of Maoist meditation on art and the cultural divide. But those meditations need to be, at the very least, smart. This isn’t.
