Austin City Limits 2010 Lineup

Matt Kiebus :: Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 2:00 pm

SXSW marks the start of the music season where up-and-coming acts schlep their way into Austin and take over downtown. ACL is when the established bands roll into town and get to have some fun.

Today, the live music capital announced the lineup for the 2010 ACL Festival at Austin’s Zelker Park on October 8-10. Similar to previous years it boasts arguably one of the best festival lineups of the year. Headlined by the Strokes, Muse, Flaming Lips, Vampire Weekend, M.I.A., Phish, and The Eagles, ACL has a little something for everyone. The blue capital of our country’s reddest state can sure throw a party: great music, beer, and BBQ. The 3-day passes for the festival sold out in a mere 14 hours. Single day passes go on sale today. Check out the full lineup after the jump. MORE »

Yeasayer: Live At Webster Hall

Gray Hurlburt :: Wednesday, May 5th, 2010 2:00 pm

College students galore stuffed the main floor and mezzanine of Webster Hall last night to see Yeasayer—a testament that their second coming, Odd Blood, is more important to lower Manhattan’s NYU-ville than finals papers. And, oh boy, did they put on a show, a colorful spectacle full of their usual far-fangled flair, supported by Seagull and Sleigh Bells. While I missed out on Seagull, Derek Miller and Alexis Krauss of Sleigh Bells roused an impressive amount of energy from the crowd, simply with their handsome selves, a Gibson SG, and their new hectic single “Tell ‘Em”. They were blisteringly loud, naturally, and had people surprised to be head-banging. Then Yeasayer took the stage at eleven, taking to instruments sat atop glowing stands. Anand Wilder, Chris Keating, and Ira Wolf Tuton, joined by two backing musicians, opened with the coordinated kluge “The Children”, followed by a spectacular “Madder Red” and “Mondegreen”. MORE »

Remix Contest: Yeasayer’s “O.N.E.”

Nick Nicoludis :: Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 1:20 pm

Everyone knows that Yeasayer‘s breakout track from their newest album is their blissfully retro, electro-pop banger “O.N.E.” It’s pretty great, and it’s a track that I might be embarrassed to get caught listening to by myself. But Diplo’s Mad Decent label and Aviary are asking if you think you could do better. I don’t know if it’s possible to make this song any catchier, but all you of dub-step djs and disco-house spinners can have your way with the song, enter, vote and possibly win some pretty sweet prizes. Yeasayer: Odd Blood

Gray Hurlburt :: Friday, April 9th, 2010 5:30 pm

In leather police boots and checkered red flannel, Ira Wolf Tuton strolled through the dim Manhattan hotel lobby with an espresso in the palm of his hand. This occurred on an evening soon after Thanksgiving and the parallel between his clothes and the urbane decor of the room was disjointed, perhaps even cinematic. After sipping from his cup, Ira introduced me to the other members of the band, whiskered Chris Keating and spectacled Anand Wilder. Here together, they looked like the apropos ambassadors of eclectic Brooklyn, where they now live in separate apartments. MORE »

Julian Casablancas of The Strokes Speculates September Album Release Date

Amy Laviero :: Friday, March 12th, 2010 1:20 pm

During a recent interview with theChicago Tribune, Strokes front-man Julian Casablancas confirmed the band’s headlining performance for Lollapalooza. In the interview, Casablancas also speculates a September release for their upcoming album, the first since 2006′s First Impressions of Earth.

Casablancas is excited about the band’s upcoming schedule and proud that they’re “getting the biggest offers of [their] career.” “It feels great, because I remember people writing things like ‘We’ll see if they’re still around in 10 years’ when we first came out.”

Rumor has it that a recently reunited Soundgarden, Lady Gaga, Green Day, Arcade Fire and Phoenix will also be headlining, although festival officials have yet to confirm. Smaller blogs have also been speculating appearances by the XX, Yeasayer, and Hot Chip.

It may have been a slow week with regard to news (unless you’re the sort that found the State of the Union entertaining), but as for music, there were enough new album announcements to tide us over for a year. By now everyone has heard “Ambling Alp” the lead single off Odd Blood Yeasayer’s forthcoming album. It’s a jam-I do proclaim. The video is pretty great too. Trippy as fuck. But great. Peep it after the jump. Oh. It’s not entirely safe for work.

Nude Retreat, Sponsored By Yeasayer

Gray Hurlburt :: Thursday, November 19th, 2009 12:30 pm

To garner more interest in their upcoming LP, Odd Blood, the mad-scientists at Yeasayer have concocted a bizarre concept video for the single “Ambling Alp”. While it would be false to consider this as a proper music-video, because the track is more of an abridged science-museum-exhibit background loop, there’s a keyed factor at the forefront of dudes and dudettes á la nude, which has serially become a trend in recent history: re Girls, Flaming Lips, Carrie Prejean. Go ahead and check it out at www.amblingalp.com. Just be warned, reader, it’s a bit creepy and a bit NSFW—you might even get the feeling of having entered R2D2′s wet dream.
