Some People Never Learn: 5 Habitual Mistake Makers

Nick Nicoludis :: Tuesday, July 6th, 2010 4:00 pm

When I was little my parents instilled in me the idea that you should never make the same mistake twice, and in light of George Michael’s recent arrest this adage has been floating in my head all day. He just can’t stay out of trouble with the police. In the early hours of July 4th, Michael crashed his car into a store and was subsequently arrested; marking the second time the ex-Wham! star has been found unconscious at the wheel. Anyway, George Michael is prone to arrest just like some people are prone to drinking too much, or doing drugs, or being huge sexist pigs. Let’s take a look at some of the people who are just as liable to repeat the same mistakes as George Michael.

Cover Songs That Kick The Originals To The Curb

Amy Dupcak :: Friday, July 2nd, 2010 1:30 pm

Is there such thing as a cover song that’s better than the original? For all the crap out there—the Britney Spears cover of “I Love Rock n Roll” or Hillary Duff’s rendition of “My Generation”—there are a few rare gems out there that have managed to top the original, reinventing an old song or bringing to light a never-before-heard one. There are even those that you probably didn’t know were covers. Here are our top pics. MORE »

90s Rock Legends: Where Are They Now?

Amy Dupcak :: Monday, June 28th, 2010 3:30 pm

The early-to-mid ’90s were pretty golden in terms of rock music. Now, over a decade later, the grungers have grown up, lost some hair, and have either moved on to other projects or are attempting to pick up the pieces of their old bands. Something of a revival seems to be stirring in the air, but it’s not all as blissfully angsty as it used to be. Read on for what some ’90s rockers have been up to, good and bad…. MORE »

Golden Girls: Five Elderly Singers Who Deserve The Betty White Treatment

Amy Rose Spiegel :: Wednesday, June 9th, 2010 3:30 pm

Betty White has become a Golden Girl in more than one sense of the word, which is to say that her recent career relaunch has confirmed her status as America’s most beloved octogenarian. She gets tons of press, she has a new television show, Hot in Cleveland, debuting this month, and she has been quoted as wanting to get down and dirty with Robert Redford. Basically, she’s untouchable. People fall all over themselves to celebrate her lengthy and accomplished acting career, and rightly so. But what about the ancient musicians of the world? Don’t they deserve some recognition, or at least, a few Facebook campaigns?  Below, a list of the elderly songbirds we’d like to see get the Betty White treatment. MORE »

Playlist: MGMT’s “Brian Eno” and Other Weird Musical Shout-Outs

Amy Rose Spiegel :: Wednesday, April 28th, 2010 11:40 am

On their new album, Congratulations, MGMT pays a rather strange quasi-homage to the mack daddy of ambient music, Brian Eno.  The song, aptly titled “Brian Eno,” was described in this way by band member Andrew VanWyngarden:

“It’s kind of a vampire-punk-rock song about finding Brian Eno in like a cathedral in Transylvania. He’s like a dark wizard. We originally asked him to produce the track, but he hadn’t heard of us.”

“Dark wizards” were chiefly characterized by their ability to create pleasant, minimalist music?  I have to brush up on my fantasy stories, I guess, because I don’t remember anything that sounded like Another Green World in the Harry Potter movies.

This bizarre tribute got me to thinking about some of the other questionable shout-outs that have been done in song.  Here’s a brief list of my favorites. MORE »

Songs in the Key of Apocalypse

Johnny Sanford :: Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 1:45 pm

Things seem to be heating up these days, (Climate Change, anyone?) and things don’t seem to be getting easier as far as the economy goes. Not to mention we’ve had two earthquakes in the past two months, a Snowmaggedon and for all intensive purposes, a snow hurricane that just hit N.Y.C. with a foot and a half of snow within the past week. In the media, we’ve been bombarded with movies like 2012 and The Road, television has programs like History Channel’s Life After People.
So, with all these terrible things goin’ down, D+T thought of a good list of apocalyptic songs to sing along to, with the likes of Johnny Cash, Bon Jovi and TOOL. Here’s the list. MORE »

Best Break-Up Songs of All Time

Johnny Sanford :: Thursday, February 11th, 2010 1:45 pm

Let’s face it. Valentine’s Day is coming up this Sunday, and anyone who isn’t in a healthy relationship with some significant other is loathe to be reminded of this fact. Spooning with a pillow at night is nowhere near as satisfying as having another human being, even if it is on a twin-sized freakin’ mattress. But what about those relationships that end just before Valentine’s Day, or worse yet, actually on V-Day? That’s why we here at D+T have compiled a Best Of Breakup Songs Playlist to ease the pain of having your heart thrown out of a moving vehicle and run over repeatedly on the highway of love. Check it out after the jump. MORE »

Growler Prowler: A List

Amy Rose Spiegel :: Wednesday, January 27th, 2010 5:05 pm

It’s happened to everyone at some point or another.  You’re at a bar, innocently drinking with friends, when someone starts rattling off exactly why they love their beer in excruciating, technical detail.  “It’s the hoppiness that really makes that finish so divine,” or some such.

Yes, my friends, beer culture has essentially become wine culture, replete with its own jargon and condescension.  Usually, you can bullshit your way out of a long-winded history of microbreweries and their oh-so-vastly superior output if you mutter a few words to show that you’re in the know.  Real past responses I’ve used include:

“Unibroue is by far the best German export, I think.  Excuse me for a second, I need to pee.”

“Dogfish Head isn’t THAT overrated.  I think I see my friend over there.”

“Uh, yeah…IPAs.” [Don't judge me too harshly here.  I was slumped in a corner with no real exit strategy].

Hey New York, A Gift From Me to You

Amy Laviero :: Wednesday, January 20th, 2010 1:25 pm

A study published last month reported that, when it comes to happiness, New York ranks dead last when compared to any other state in the country.  As if this accomplishment weren’t enough, the whole tri-state area monopolizes the bottom three spots on the list with Connecticut at 51 and New Joisey at 50.  Not only is New York sad but so are its neighbors.  MORE »

Far Away? Far Out. The 4 Best Psychedelic Rock Tracks From Other Countries

Amy Rose Spiegel :: Friday, January 15th, 2010 4:30 pm

From South America to Eastern Europe, psychedelic rock has been interpreted through the lens of many different cultures through the years.  This usually results in bizarre hybrid songs that are equally traditional garage rock and local influence, to varying success (if you’d like an example of where it doesn’t work, check out Pakistan’s most popular band, Junoon.  I love tabla, but it just ain’t right with distorted guitar).  The artists listed here have definitely found the right mixture of the two, proving that you can be far from the original scene and still be way far out.

Wintry Mix: A Playlist To Keep You Feeling Warm & Powerful

Amy Rose Spiegel :: Thursday, January 14th, 2010 3:25 pm

New York in January and February is suicide-inducingly cold.  Sometimes it seems that the only thing it’s got going for it is the wintry camaraderie that it elicits in its people.  We love to commiserate about the weather, be it in the office, among friends, or with strangers, especially the smokers among us.  That’s a pretty weak high point, but, in truth, it’s not the only one out there.   Winter is best when you spend it holing up by yourself or with a few choice loved ones and reading, playing board games, drinking whiskey, and, of course, snuggling under the sheets.  The following playlist is intended to be a soundtrack to all of those activities.
