Can Ridley Scott Resurrect Alien?

Colm McAuliffe :: Thursday, June 17th, 2010 4:00 pm

While it’s bad news for anyone eagerly awaiting the release of an Alien 5, but Ridley Scott, the veteran British filmmaker, is set to revisit the film with two prequels, an announcement which filled me with something which can only be described as delight. His 1979 original was a masterpiece. But has the Alien name been irreparably tarnished by those awful sequels? And Ridley’s own output since the early nineties leaves one with the sneaking suspicion that brother Tony (The Last Boy Scout, Top Gun) may be the talented one in the family. Mogwai To Release Live DVD/CD This Summer

Nick Nicoludis :: Friday, April 30th, 2010 5:55 pm

The seminal Scottish post-rocker group Mogwai have joined together with directors/film makers Vincent Moon and Nat Le Scouarnec to create a groundbreaking audio/visual project. The collaboration manifests itself as a live CD and DVD. The combined release, Burning being the DVD portion and Special Moves the CD portion, is footage from three live shows shot in Brooklyn during their 2008/2009 American tour. The film premiered at the Glasgow Film Festival this past February, and has a proper release date of August 2010. But don’t scoff so quickly at the idea of a concert film, because this is nothing like any other concert DVD you’ve seen before. Watch the trailer and get more info after the jump MORE »

Exit Through the Gift Shop: Review

Johnny Sanford :: Thursday, April 29th, 2010 12:30 pm

We might as well declare this Banksy Week, seeing as we’ve posted at least three times about him in the past two days. Regardless of whether you think he’s a good artist or a hack, you gotta admit he’s got one hell of a reputation for no one knowing who he is. My opinion lands in the former category, enough for me to plunk down $12.50 to see his new film Exit Through the Gift Shop at Landmark Sunshine Cinemas last night. The film chronicles street art from its relative beginnings (at least what we know as street art today) and brings us to auction houses where some of the same art is being bought for millions of dollars. The narrative brings us to meet some of street art’s most influential players like Space Invader, Shepard Fairey (now infamous for this) MBW, and the ever elusive Banksy, who comes on screen in silhouette and a voice vocoder. Girls Score Porn Flick

Nick Nicoludis :: Friday, April 23rd, 2010 3:15 pm

Maybe you remember SF rocker’s Girls’ video for “Lust For Life” that came out a little while back. It was filled with naked people, guitar playing and semi-XXX scenes. The song is great, and so is the video for that matter, but apparently front man Christopher Owen didn’t feel he took the idea far enough. So, if you like porn and you like Girls you’re in luck. Both the songs “Darling” and “Solitude” appear on the short film entitled I Want Your Love directed by Travis Matthews. MORE »

James Bond Finally Defeated?

Colm McAuliffe :: Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 12:15 pm

Rampant misogyny, homophobia, casual alcoholism, shaken and stirred into a heady, decadent mix of espionage, deceit and Duran Duran theme tunes…of course, this has to be James Bond, Britain’s most colonial and traditional hero. Despite being one of the most enduring and seemingly impermeable icons of the last sixty years, Bond appears to be the latest, and most unlikely, victims of the worldwide recession. Despite his array of gadgets and limitless sex appeal, her Majesty’s most conniving and suave of secret agents appears to have finally been undone by something as simple as money.

Re-Inventing the Film Flop

Colm McAuliffe :: Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 12:45 pm

David Lynch’s generally unassailable career has perhaps but one flop amongst his array of ultra-hip classics: Dune, the 1984 film starring Francesca Annis and, the ridiculous looking (see left), Sting. Costing $40m to make, the film took in a comparatively measly $29.7m at the box office. Since then, it’s reputation has not grown - Dune is an ugly looking period piece, tarnished from the beginning with a ridiculous opening monolgue. However, Hollywood’s latest ‘big idea’ appears to be taking film flops and righting the wrongs by re-making them entirely.

Arcade Fire Teams Up With Spike Jonze For Short Film

Johnny Sanford :: Monday, April 12th, 2010 12:10 pm

Hipsters unite, two of your favorite things in life are about to come together: Spike Jonze is set to do a short film with Arcade Fire. According to MTV.com, reps for Jonze said “Spike will be in Austin shooting a short film which is a collaboration with Arcade Fire.” Further details have been few and far between, but the plot is said to revolve around “friends growing apart,” and will feature late-teen actors. Judging by both the track record of both Jonze and Arcade Fire, this is gonna be an awesome collaboration. It won’t be their first, however, because Arcade Fire rerecorded their song “Wake Up” for last years feature film Where the Wild Things Are. It’s no surprise that this would eventually happen, seeing that Jonze has had his share of influence in the music world. Check out some of the inspired music videos he’s directed after the jump. Michel Gondry Chats About ‘Thorn in the Heart’ & ‘The Green Hornet’

Danielle Johnsen :: Wednesday, March 24th, 2010 2:46 pm

Last week, I had the chance to sit down with Michel Gondry, acclaimed director and mind-blowing extraordinaire, to discuss his most recent works, Thorn in the Heart and The Green Hornet. While the family based documentary and super hero action film couldn’t be any more different than each other, Gondry seems to approach all of his projects with the same vigor and whimsy one has learned to expect. Showcasing 85 feature-length films and 45 short films, the festival will kick off April 21st and will be showing films all the way until May 2. Among some of the highly anticipated films to be shown will be Ondine by Neil Jordan which features Collin Farrell as a fisherman who catches the ultimate angler’s prize: a mermaid. White Stripes’ “Under the Great White Northern Lights”

Johnny Sanford :: Tuesday, March 16th, 2010 12:45 pm

The guitar is tense on stage. It practically hates Jack White. He fights it into submission and it howls accordingly. The crowd roars as the song finishes, to the sound of a crew of bagpipe players. Cut to a scene of Jack hating the set while Meg drags on her umpteenth cigarette on Under the Great White Northern Lights, the new documentary that sheds some light on the candy-cane themed rockers. Filmed by director Emmett Malloy, the spectacle rotates from vicious, terse stage shows, anecdotes of the history and philosophy of the band, and the free shows that White Stripes did during the day (on a boat, in a bowling alley and in village squares) on their 2007 tour of Canada in support of their 6th studio album Icky Thump. Director Christopher Nolan Speaks on upcoming Batman Film

Johnny Sanford :: Thursday, March 11th, 2010 12:45 pm

When The Dark Knight opened to critical acclaim in 2008, voracious viewers had one question: When’s the next one coming out? Internet rumors abounded about the possibility of a third Batman film by Christopher Nolan, who also directed the first reboot of the Batman series, Batman Begins as well as cult-classic Memento. Though the tragic death of Heath Ledger certainly leaves the Joker out of any new films, a new interview with L.A. Times has confirmed that a third movie is indeed in the works. MORE »
