Playlist: Up The (Fashion) Punx!

Nick Nicoludis :: Thursday, February 25th, 2010 4:30 pm

Now, I’m not so hip to the world of fashion but I’ve been observing a new trend that seems to be sweeping across misunderstood fashionistas and taking the young art school girl scene by storm. Punk is in. I haven’t seen so many studs since a Casualties video and there are more Doc Martens kicking around the streets than at a National Front meeting.  The fashion world constantly evolves itself and usually these styles are just clothes and clothes alone but this look is associated with a very specific community: punks. I think it’s only fair that if you take on the look of an underground scene such as punk, it’s important to have at least a basic knowledge of the music that created the style. This playlist is designed to enable all the ripped jean jacket wearing punkanistas out there understand a little bit about where the image comes from. MORE »

Playlist: Take Me To The City

Amy Rose Spiegel :: Friday, February 19th, 2010 4:30 pm

I’m not exactly what you’d call “well-traveled.”  I’ve been to some excellent places and seen the great things they have to offer, for sure, but I’m not some jet-setter who can readily put forth an opinion on many of of the major cities of the world.  Instead, I’ve learned about them largely through the lyrics of the musicians I listen to.  Below are some of the songs that have whisked me to far-off locales over the years.

Playlist: Girls, Girls, Girls

Amy Rose Spiegel :: Wednesday, February 17th, 2010 2:10 pm

Hey, girl.   There’s just something about you - your impending womanhood, adulterous ways, beauty, elusiveness, and utter perfection have all been the inspiration for a myriad of tracks over the years, some better than others.  You really get around, don’t you?  This list is a sampling of some of the various girl-centric jams out there, ranging in tone from plaintive to downright celebratory.

Wintry Mix: A Playlist To Keep You Feeling Warm & Powerful

Amy Rose Spiegel :: Thursday, January 14th, 2010 3:25 pm

New York in January and February is suicide-inducingly cold.  Sometimes it seems that the only thing it’s got going for it is the wintry camaraderie that it elicits in its people.  We love to commiserate about the weather, be it in the office, among friends, or with strangers, especially the smokers among us.  That’s a pretty weak high point, but, in truth, it’s not the only one out there.   Winter is best when you spend it holing up by yourself or with a few choice loved ones and reading, playing board games, drinking whiskey, and, of course, snuggling under the sheets.  The following playlist is intended to be a soundtrack to all of those activities.

Songs That Suck

SXB :: Friday, November 20th, 2009 5:30 pm

In honor of Vampire Day, we’ve put together a playlist of songs that suck. Don’t fault us for subjectivity. Remember songwriters, just because you wrote something you think is great doesn’t mean you actually have to play it in front of people. Check out the horror after the jump.

Songs That May Or May Not Be About Anal Sex (But Totally Are)

Brenna Ehrlich :: Friday, November 13th, 2009 9:55 am

We’re nothing if not classy over here at D+T. Prompted by the revelation that the song “Sweat A La Long” by Inner Circle had some dirtier-than-usual undertones, two staffers decided to come up with the penultimate list of tunes that may or may not be (but so totally are) about, um, that. D+T Playlist: Pump-Up Songs

Brenna Ehrlich :: Thursday, November 5th, 2009 4:00 pm

OK, congrats on getting past the nausea-inducing title of this post. Seriously, though, is there any way to talk about empowering music that doesn’t make one want to hide under one’s desk in shame? Anyway, welcome to a new feature on the D+T Web site. Each week someone over here at magazine/Internet headquarters will be compiling an original playlist based (however loosely) on a theme of some sort. My inaugural mix-located after the jump-was inspired by a startling phenomenon that I noticed while watching my stories (a.k.a. guilty pleasure television): the pump-up grrl song. As of late, that jam has been “Good Girls Go Bad,” by Cobra Starship-which seems to have replaced KT Tunstall’s “Suddenly I See.” Now, while I could tolerate “Suddenly I See,” I draw the line at voice distortion and cameos by Gossip Girl cast members. Click “more” to check out my alternative collection of anthems.
