The xx Are Pooped

Stephen Blackwell :: Thursday, October 29th, 2009 12:50 pm

Nobody should be too shocked about The xx taking a break due to exhaustion. We interviewed them in August and they were kind of already complaining about it. Keyboardist / guitarist Baria Quereshi, the first to plead exhaustion, lamented, “I turn twenty on Tuesday. We’re having two gigs in London on Monday and Tuesday, so I guess that that’s my party.” Poor guy.

Pitchfork hypothesized that “300 CMJ shows” will run anybody down, and, it is true — they did play too many shows at CMJ this year. But I don’t know. At SXSW in 2008 you couldn’t walk around the streets at any point in the day without hearing the sound of No Age creeping out of some club or outdoor party.

Hmmm, maybe shooting your burgeoning band in the foot is a British thing?

The Trip Wire: Haiku Review

Alex Moore :: Friday, October 23rd, 2009 4:35 pm

The Trip Wire has posted an amazing “Haiku Review” of the party Death+Taxes threw last night with Japandroids and Real Estate.

Here it is, in all its succinct glory:

A big stuffed bear head
Party. Thanks Death and Taxes
Bros and little beers.

Thanks for the shout-out, guys! I don’t really get the thing about the stuffed bear head, but whatevs, I’m still impressed that someone over there is able to crank out Haikus on a regular basis. And thanks to Japandroids, Real Estate and DJ VDK for a great show! More photos and info after the jump.

Thanks to all who came out to Death+Taxes / Onitsuka Tiger party last night at Glasslands. It was a mob scene — we appreciated your patience. And a big thanks to Real Estate and Japandroids for killing it! And to Colt 45 for providing drinks and the light-up Billy Dee Williams sign.

Check out the write up in The Voice

We’ll be posting pictures shortly. Probably in an hour or so. If you can’t wait, you can check some out here.

Brian Williams: Where Is The Love?

Alex Moore :: Wednesday, October 21st, 2009 6:15 pm

We were super psyched this summer to learn that our favorite news anchor — the Walter Cronkite of our generation, the man we trust to deliver substantive interviews with world leaders — was a total indie rock freak.

When BriTunes launched, with Williams’ signature style of intellignet, earnest inquiry directed at the likes of Great Lake Swimmers and Deer tick, we were literally pumping fists and starting chants of “Bri-an! Bri-an!” around the office.

But BriTunes has proved a disappointment — it hasn’t been updated since July. Alas, it seems the voice that nightly leads us through the travails of the modern world will not end up leading us through the triumphs of rock.

But hey, it is CMJ week. Time to stetp it up, Bri! Maybe we’ll check in next week to find an incisive interview with Japandroids or something (whom, incidentally, you can see for free at our party tomorrow night.) Click through the jump to watch Brian Williams interivew Great Lake Swimmers and see more details about our Japandroids party.

Today In Music

Brenna Ehrlich :: Wednesday, October 21st, 2009 1:45 pm

Welcome to the kind of official reintroduction of D+T’s links round-up, appropriately titled ”Today In Music.” If you live in New York City (and you don’t happen to reside under a rock situated smack in the middle of the mainstream), then you probably know that there’s a huge music fest going on called CMJ-which means there’s a hell of a lot going on in music today. Regardless, we have slogged through the spiraling corridors of the Internet to bring you a wholly fresh batch of links. Click your brains out after the jump.
