Them Crooked Vultures: No Bullshit, Just Rock

Zach Custer :: Tuesday, February 9th, 2010 2:15 pm

Last night Them Crooked Vultures rocked the Roseland Ballroom for just under two hours straight. They opened with “No One Loves Me and Neither Do I,” and I was immediately elated to see Dave Grohl back behind the kit, a whirlwind of long, dark brown hair amidst two chaotic arms that kept the most powerful beat I’ve seen at any rock show. So, Is That Them Crooked Vultures Band Any Good?

Stephen Blackwell :: Monday, October 26th, 2009 3:45 pm

You know about Them Crooked Vultures: It’s the new supergroup featuring Dave Grohl back on drums, Josh Homme on guitar and vocals, and John Paul Jones on bass, which Rolling Stone aptly referred to as “Dave Grohl’s dream team.” They’ve just debuted the first single, called “New Fang,” off their forthcoming self-titled debut, due out November 17th.

Thank god it’s not all hype — the song rocks and rolls, which is rare, yeah? The main riff would’ve come across strained and angular in QOTSA, but John Paul Jones adds a Physical Graffiti-era boogie to the mix while Grohl pounds on the ride cymbal’s bell like you know who.

The hook’s not bad (it’s got that “21 Guns” pause thing in it — a device that makes any rock song better 100% of the time), and Homme delivers all his signature swirly guitar stuff throughout. Listen to this now.
